Why we teach prophecy verse by verse

Most people who tell me they "can't understand Revelation" have never actually read it start to finish. They have read about it. They have seen a chart, heard a sermon on chapter 13, watched a documentary that spent forty minutes on one number. Fragments do not add up to a book.

Verse-by-verse teaching is slower and less exciting than headline prophecy. It is also the only approach that lets the text set its own agenda. When you read Daniel in order, the visions interpret each other. Chapter 8 explains chapter 7. Chapter 9 gives you the frame. The book was built to be read as a book.

That is the whole method here, and it is not complicated: open the Bible, start at verse one, and keep going. What you lose in drama you gain in confidence -- because at the end you are not holding somebody's chart. You are holding the text.
